NASUWT welcomes pay rise deal for Northern Ireland teachers

The decision follows an intervention from the Minister for Education, Paul Givan, to establish an independent review of teacher workload

NASUWT has welcomed the news that its members in Northern Ireland have voted to accept a 5.5% pay increase, alongside “significant” measures to address workload pressures. The decision follows an intervention from the Minister for Education, Paul Givan, to establish an independent review of teacher workload.

Some 66.2% of NASUWT members voted in favour of the offer, with 5,836 members taking part in the survey.

Dr Patrick Roach, NASUWT general secretary, said: “NASUWT members have been consistent in their demand for a fair pay settlement for teachers in line with that paid elsewhere in the UK. Because of our members’ action, teachers will now receive the pay award that they deserve.

“We also commend Minister Givan for his willingness to listen to and recognise the serious concerns of our members. This was instrumental in securing a positive outcome and resolving our dispute.”

Justin McCamphill, NASUWT national official for Northern Ireland, added: “I want to pay tribute to our members who have stood firm in their pursuit of fair pay and better working conditions. Members can be assured that the NASUWT will bring their concerns to the independent review of workload while also ensuring that previous commitments are implemented.

“While we celebrate this win for teachers, we cannot ignore the ongoing injustice faced by our Further Education colleagues. FE lecturers have been undervalued for too long. Minister Archibald must now step in to ensure they receive a fair and sustainable settlement, just as Minister Givan has done for teachers. Further Education is vital to Northern Ireland’s economy, and its staff deserve respect and recognition.”
